Saint Joseph’s University Takes 1st Place in NAAIA’s 8th Annual National Talent Development Competition

Washington, DC – The National African American Insurance Association (NAAIA) held its National Talent Development Competition on September 12 and 14 with eleven (11) teams of undergraduate students participating in the two-day event. Now in its eighth year, students delivered a 15-minute pitch in response to the prompt: assisting the fictional New Enterprise Insurance Company in developing inclusive insurance products for US-based  low income and underserved communities who experience significant weather and climate disaster events.

Saint Joseph’s University students Kevin Yonkeu, Joe Gibbs and Selynne Ochieng, took home the top prize with each earning a $1,500 scholarship. The team was sponsored by Everest who served as their corporate advocate and provided coaching to the students alongside university faculty.

“The Everest team was honored to participate in the NAAIA Talent Development Competition and mentor students from St. Joseph’s University,” said Jhan D. Doughty, Everest’s Global Head of Diversity, Equity and Inclusion. “These exceptionally talented students dedicated countless hours of time, research and preparation to their winning presentation, and we are proud of their hard work and dedication.”

“Our hearts are bursting with joy and gratitude at our Saint Joseph’s University Maguire Academy of Insurance and Risk Management team’s first place award,” said Mary Ann Cook, Ed.D., Executive Director of the Maguire Academy of Insurance and Risk Management at SJU’s Haub School of Business. “By leveraging their academic, technical, and collaborative talents, our students truly embodied the richness that diversity, equity, and inclusion can bring to solving today’s complex business challenges.”

Florida A&M University students Aurora Grier, Kelisia Morrison and Justice Youmans placed second (sponsored by Marsh McLennan Agency), and Florida State University’s Dudley Mayard, Victor Oguledo and Bryan Fuller placed third (sponsored by Philadelphia Insurance). All student competitors receive scholarships for their efforts. Scholarship funding is made possible by NAAIA Partners, the NAAIA Foundation and the Spencer Educational Foundation.

“We are always impressed by the persistence and dedication of our student competitors,” said Omari Jahi Aarons, NAAIA’s Executive Director & Chief Operating Officer. “There’s no doubt our industry will be in good hands with their leadership.”

The competition was judged by senior leaders from NAAIA Partners: Lavezz Middleton, Operations Leader, CNA Insurance, Loi Stoddard-Graham, Vice President of Business Growth & Retention, MetLife Legal Plans, and Jason Warden, Regional Vice President Houston at The Hartford.

NAAIA Issues Statement Regarding Supreme Court’s Decision on Affirmative Action

NAAIA Issues Statement Regarding Supreme Court’s Decision on Affirmative Action

Washington, DC – Today the National African American Insurance Association (NAAIA) released its statement expressing disappointment in the recent U.S. Supreme Court rulings.

NAAIA has reviewed the U.S. Supreme Court’s decision regarding the use of race-based affirmative action in college admissions, and we are disappointed in the outcome rendered last week. We believe this ruling will further widen the college accessibility gap for students of color, and thus diminish the opportunity for our industry’s workforce to reflect the growing racial demographics of its customer base.

The Court’s rulings on affirmative action, student loan forgiveness and religious freedom, coupled with a rise in state-based legislation to dismantle progress in diversity, equity and inclusion (DEI), hold implications that can disrupt and reverse progress in workplace efforts stewarded by business leaders, human resources managers, chief DEI officers and employee resource group leaders.

NAAIA remains steadfast in our mission to diversify the insurance industry by introducing insurance and risk management as a career of choice for people of color, developing racially and ethnically diverse professionals and creating opportunities that accelerate our career advancement.

As such, we are committed to working with our Partner network to be the source of racially and gender diverse talent through our annual conference, job postings site and career fairs, and will continue to explore unique and innovative pathways that meet the needs of our current and future members, Partners and the industry at-large. We call upon our corporate, educational and community partners to recommit to these actions as well.

NAAIA welcomes insurance professionals at every level and career stage, from college students to C-suite executives – to join us in our mission and treasure our partnership with organizations who share our commitment to inclusive and equitable environments.

NAAIA Reveals “The Next Steps on the Journey” to Furthering Equity for African American Professionals in the Insurance Industry

New report builds on seminal research published in 2018 and explores what has changed for professionals in the industry over the past five years

WASHINGTON, DC: January 19, 2022 — The National African American Insurance Association (NAAIA) is launching the second installment to its groundbreaking research on Blacks/African Americans in the insurance industry: “The Next Steps on the Journey: Has Anything Changed?”

“On one hand, there is a prevailing sense from Blacks/African Americans in the sector that companies are seeking to find credible and practical ways to solve longstanding inequities,” says Omari Jahi Aarons, Executive Director and Chief Operating Officer, NAAIA. “However, the report highlights that many of these actions are falling short because they are not addressing inequities at the foundational level.”

Through quantitative and personal insights from more than 650 professionals in the risk and insurance industry, the study sheds light on some of the strides the industry has made over the past five years, but also lays bare the opportunity-deficit Blacks/African Americans still face in the industry. For example,

  • Most survey respondents agreed that their organizations were committed to diversity (60%) and inclusion (61%), and nearly half of those surveyed felt that their organizations were committed to advancing equity (43%) and equality (48%).

  •  Half of respondents felt there was evidence of support of diversity, equity and inclusion (DEI) strategies from management (50%) and CEOs (51%) at their organizations.

  •   Respondents identified the tragic murder of George Floyd and many other Blacks/African Americans and People of Color as the catalyst for centering conversations on race and the risk and insurance industry has responded with a host of new initiatives to address disparities.  Respondents reported increased exposure from initiatives specifically DEI-related training (57%), support for employee resource groups (35%) and mentorship programs (21%).  However, these initiatives have not translated to career advancement.

  • A higher percentage of survey participants marked racial and gender bias as top barriers to entry to the industry over those surveyed five years ago.

  • Most respondents felt that lack of promotions or advancement is the most significant barrier to retention (75%), followed by lack of growth opportunities (70%) and lack of mentorship (68%).

  •  84% of respondents remarked that they continue to encounter obstacles in their career progress compared to other under-represented groups because of either conscious or unconscious racial bias.

The report also highlights changes employers, professionals and organizations like NAAIA can make to meaningfully cultivate and empower Blacks/African Americans.

“There is no single panacea for solving this systemic challenge,” said Dr. Leroy D. Nunery, II, President, Evolution Advisors, who conducted the study. “It will require both widespread industry action and individual initiative to create a more equitable risk and insurance industry.”

Survey respondents recommended improvements risk and insurance organizations could make to more fully prioritize DEI. The top three recommendations were:

  • Enhancing recruitment and talent identification initiatives, including a greater focus on recruitment from HBCUs and institutions with substantially diverse student populations, and the promotion of Blacks/African Americans to officer-level roles.

  • Addressing compensation and pay inequities, while increasing pay transparency.

  • Increasing levels and frequency of mentorships and providing more opportunities to network with executives.

Marsh McLennan, the world’s leading professional services firm in the areas of risk, strategy and people, supported the research.

“Studies like ‘The Next Steps on the Journey’ can serve as a blueprint for the industry to better design programs that meaningfully advance Black/African American leaders in insurance and risk management,” said Moreland Murray, Chief Inclusion and Diversity Officer and Chief People Officer, Corporate, Marsh McLennan. “We are committed to DEI leadership in our industry, and through support of this research and the investments we are making in recruitment, training, mentorship and sponsorship programs for Black/African American talent, hope to be a beacon for Black/African Americans professionals in the industry.”

NAAIA Holds 7th Annual National Talent Development Competition; Florida A&M University Students Take 1st Place

NAAIA Holds 7th Annual National Talent Development Competition; Florida A&M University Students Take 1st Place

Students presented on a critical issue in the insurance industry: advancing diversity, equity, and inclusion.

Washington, DC – The National African American Insurance Association (NAAIA) held its National Talent Development Competition on October 18-19 with fourteen (14) teams of undergraduate students participating in the two-day event. Now in its seventh year, students delivered a 15-minute pitch in response to the prompt: developing a diversity, equity and inclusion program to address recruiting and talent gaps for a fictional insurance company. Students proposed several solutions including employee training on unconscious bias and reducing microaggressions, developing mentorship and sponsorship programs, hiring racially diverse members of the company’s board of directors, and establishing external partnerships with industry organizations.

Keanu E. Capers, Danyell Johnson, and Amyia J. White, students at Florida A&M University (FAMU), took home the top prize with their pitch themed “Reach the Future,” with each earning a $1,500 scholarship. FAMU student Mailo Johnson served as the team alternate and provided tech support to his colleagues during the competition. Marsh McLennan Agency (MMA) served as the sponsoring corporate advocate and provided coaching to the students.

“MMA celebrates FAMU’s student team for their well-earned recognition as the national champion of NAAIA’s Talent Development Competition. We are proud to have partnered with these amazing students who demonstrated innovation, resourcefulness, tenacity, and confidence,” said Kira Kimball, MMA’s Chief Diversity, Equity and Inclusion Officer. “Their response to the case study was grounded in strategic-thinking and real-world information, which positioned them for impact. As the team proudly proclaimed in their presentation: they are our future. MMA couldn’t agree more!”

“I’m overjoyed that FAMU was awarded first place! The team proved that the future is bright for our students and this young generation. We just have to give them a voice and an opportunity,” said Rashada Houston Turner, Associate Instructor at FAMU’s School of Business and Industry. “Our students’ victory reflected their passion for diversity, equity, inclusion, and opportunity.”

St. John’s University students Christopher Bhola, David Ramdeen and Christel Wanchope placed second (sponsored by Axis), and North Carolina A&T University’s Jacquoia Hunter, Yentell James and Mikayla McDaniel placed third (sponsored by Selective Insurance). All student competitors receive scholarships for their efforts, with higher place teams receiving higher amounts. Scholarship funding is made possible by NAAIA Partners, the NAAIA Foundation and the Spencer Educational Foundation.

“Each year, students in the competition continue to show us that we have incredibly talented young people ready to take on our industry’s biggest challenges and lead us forward,” said Omari Jahi Aarons, NAAIA’s Executive Director & Chief Operating Officer. “If organizations are serious about looking for top talent, we say ‘look no further’.”

The competition was evaluated by guest judges Nicole Brewer, Corporate Vice President for Group Benefit Solutions at New York Life, Michele Lamarre, Vice President and Head of Diversity, Inclusion and Belonging, QBE North America, William “Bill” Wharton, Head of Argo Insurance Bermuda, and David Williams, Senior Vice President and Chief Multinational Underwriting Officer at Liberty Mutual Insurance.
